Shaun Jamel Smith (born August 19, 1981 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American football defensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League.

High school years

Smith attended Midwood High School in Brooklyn and Wichita Heights High School in Wichita, Kansas.

College

Smith played for 2 years as a defensive lineman for Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. He then transferred to University Of South Carolina where he played as a reserve defensive end his junior and senior years. He record 38 tackles, a sack and fumble recovery his senior year. He was an African American studies major.

NFL career

Smith was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a college free agent in 2003. He was signed to the practice squad, and spent his entire rookie season there. In the 2004 season Smith was waived by Dallas, picked up by the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona cut Smith after their final preseason game. Smith was picked up The New Orleans Saints who placed Smith on the practice squad, later signed to New Orleans 53 man roster. Smith had 16 tackles for New Orleans and one start he made his NFL debut versus the San Francisco 49ers on September 19, Smith was waived by New Orleans on November 30, 2004. Smith was picked up by Cincinnati Bengals on December 1, 2004. Smith recorded 6 tackles for Cincinnati, and started one game. Smith started 5 games in 2005 for the Cincinnati Bengals. He recorded 17 tackles, in 2005. He was signed to a 4 year, $8.65 million offer sheet by the Cleveland Browns, which the Bengals declined to match.
