John Villiers, 3rd Earl of Clarendon

John Charles Villiers, 3rd Earl of Clarendon PC (14 November 1757-22 December 1838), known as the Honourable John Charles Villiers until 1824, was a British peer and Member of Parliament.

Clarendon was the younger son of Thomas Villiers, 1st Earl of Clarendon and his wife Lady Charlotte Capell.

Political career

He was elected to Parliament for the rotten borough of Old Sarum in 1784, a seat he held until 1790, and was admitted to the Privy Council in 1787. He later represented Dartmouth from 1790 to 1802, Tain Burghs from 1802 to 1805 and Queenborough from 1807 to 1812 and again from 1822 to 1824. The latter year he succeeded his elder brother in the earldom of Clarendon and entered the House of Lords.

Marriage

On 5 January, 1791, Lord Clarendon married his maternal first cousin Maria Eleanor Forbes. Maria was a daughter of Admiral the Hon. John Forbes and Lady Mary Capell.

Lady Charlotte Capell and Lady Mary Capell were sisters. They were both daughters of William Capell, 3rd Earl of Essex and Lady Jane Hyde. Jane was a daughter of Henry Hyde, 4th Earl of Clarendon and Jane Leveson-Gower.

The elder Jane was a daughter of Sir William Leveson-Gower, 4th Baronet and Lady Jane Granville. Granville was a daughter of John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath and Jane Wyche. Wyche was a daughter of Sir Peter Wyche.

John Forbes was a son of George Forbes, 3rd Earl of Granard and Mary Stewart. Mary was a daughter of William Stewart, 1st Viscount Mountjoy.

Clarendon and Maria Eleanor Forbes only had a single child:

*Lady Mary Harriet Villiers (d. 20 January, 1835).

Clarendon died in December 1838, aged 81, and was succeeded in the earldom by his nephew George William Frederick Villiers.
