Gimcrack Stakes

The Gimcrack Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in the United Kingdom open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings. It is run over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres) at York Racecourse, and it takes place annually during the Ebor Festival meeting in August.

It was first run in 1846 and is named after Gimcrack, a popular grey racehorse in the 18th century. None of Gimcrack's 27 victories were actually at York. The owner of the winning horse in this race is traditionally invited to give a speech at the annual Gimcrack Dinner held at the racecourse in December.

Before 1987 the race was also open to two-year-old fillies. Sponsors have included the investment company Scottish Equitable from 1985 to 2006, and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing since 2007.

The 2008 running was transferred to Newbury, having been cancelled at York due to a waterlogged track.
