Guy Somner Lowman, Jr. (born in
Columbia, Missouri , 1909; died in 1941) was an American linguist who received a bachelor's degree from theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison in 1929 and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from theUniversity of London in 1931. From 1931 to 1933 he was a Sterling Fellow atYale University. He worked as chief field investigator for theLinguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada from 1931 to 1941, interviewing more than a thousand informants along the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada. He also conducted field interviews in Southern England to find correspondences in English and American dialects. He was a member of theModern Language Association and served as chairman of thephonetics section.After his death in 1941, the University of Wisconsin-Madison established the Guy S. Lowman Scholarship to further research in linguistics.
