Blyth Volunteer Lifeboat Service (BVLS) was established in August 2004 and by January 2005 had bought an offshore lifeboat (Abbie Deans Spirit Of Blyth And Wansbeck) to be based in the port of Bltyh.

In April 2006 BVLS became a "DECLARED FACILITY" with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. This means that BVLS is part of the United Kingdom's Maritime Search and Rescue Service.
