As of 2003, the town of Sakai had an estimated population of 13,082 and a density of 412.68 persons per km². The total area was 31.70 km².

The nihongo|town of Sakai|坂井町|Sakai-chō was merged into the nihongo|city of Sakai|坂井市|"Sakai-shi" on March 20, 2006. However, there still is a "Sakai-chō" in the newly created city of Sakai, having the same borders as the old "Sakai-chō".
