German submarine U-371

Unterseeboot 371 was a Type VIIC U-boat laid down November 17 1939 Howaldtswerke, Kiel. In 19 patrols, she sank 8 ships for a total of 51,401 GRT, including two warships.

On May 7 1942 U-371 was depth charged by two sub chasers, heavily damaged and had to return to base. At 04:09 am on May 4 1944, one day after causing severe damage to USS|Menges|DE-320, she became the first victim of an Allied anti-submarine tactic in the Mediterranean Sea known as "Swamp", and was sunk off the Algerian coast north of Constantine, in position coord|37|49|N|05|39|E|scale:10000000, by depth charges from the US destroyer escorts USS|Pride|DE-323 and USS|Joseph E. Campbell|DE-70, the Free French destroyer escorts "Sénégalais" and "Alcyon", and the British escort destroyer HMS "Blankney". Three crew members died while 49 survived.Fact|date=December 2007
