- Jikawo
Jikawo is one of the eight
woreda s in theGambela Region ofEthiopia . Part of the Administrative Zone 3, Jikawo is bordered on the south by the Administrative Zone 2, on the west by theAlwero River which separates it fromAkobo , on the north by theJikawo River which separates it fromSudan , and on the east by the Administrative Zone 1; theBaro River defines Jikawa's boundary with Sudan and part of the boundary with the Oromia Region. Towns in Jicawo includeTelut .The terrain in Jikawo consists of marshes and grasslands; elevations range from 300 to 400 meters above sea level. According to the "Atlas of the Ethiopian Rural Economy" published by the Central Statistical Agency (CSA), around 10% of the woreda is forest. Gambela National Park , which occupies an area south of the Baro on the eastern side of the woreda, covering about a third of its area.The economy of Jikawo is predomantly agricultural. There are no agricultural cooperatives, no documented roads, and little other infrastructure. ["Atlas of the Ethiopian Rural Economy", pp. 30f]
Based on figures published by the CSA in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 55,922, of whom 26,782 were males and 29,140 were females; 1,321 or 2.36% of its population are urban dwellers, which is greater than the Zone average of 2%. With an estimated area of 2,192.82 square kilometers, Jikawo has an estimated population density of 25.5 people per square kilometer, which is greater than the Zone average of 14.74.
