Born Akie Matsuzaki (松崎 昭恵 "Matsuzaki Akie"), Akie is regarded as a socialite. She is from a wealthy Japanese family; her father is the former president of Morinaga & Co., one of Japan's largest confectionery companies. She was educated at nihongo|Sacred Heart School in Tokyo|聖心女子学院|Seishin Joshi Gakuin, a Roman Catholic High & Middle School, then graduated from nihongo|Sacred Heart Professional Training College|聖心女子専門学校|Seishin Joshi Gakuin Senmon Gakkō [ja icon [http://www.sen-sacred-heart.ac.jp/ 聖心女子専門学校:ホーム ] ] .

Abe later worked for Dentsu Inc., the world's largest advertising agency, before marrying Shinzo Abe in 1987.

In the later of 1990s, Abe worked as a radio disc jockey in her husband's hometown of Shimonoseki.Her jockey was popular in the broadcasted area and the jockey name was "Akky".
