It is a small village-like area with many houses, [http://www.thespreadeagle.net the Spread Eagle] public house, a United Reformed Church and a small park in the centre with a cricket pitch, outdoor and indoor lawn bowls clubs, astroturf and tennis courts. It is also equipped with a children's play area. Hawkenbury Recreation Ground is also home to the Hawkenbury Men's Football Club.

It is located within the Park ward of Tunbridge Wells and within the Anglican parish of St. Peter's, and was settled before Tunbridge Wells itself was founded in the 17th century. Notable buildings included large houses called Bayhall and Halls Hole, both now demolished.

Hawkenbury is the home of a regional office of the UK Land Registry.

The veteran comedy actor Bob Todd lived there in Forest Road for many years.
