Lachoneus

Lachoneus

Lachoneus was the chief judge of the Nephites during the time of the birth of Christ, or AD 1, the 92nd year of the reign of the judges. When he began his reign as chief judge is not known, but it could not have been earlier than about 23-20 BC, the approximate time of the assassination of chief judge Seezoram. (See sourcetext|source=Book of Mormon|book=3 Nephi|chapter=1|verse=1|range=.)

If anything worth noting happened in this man's life, we do not know any of it that happened previous to the year AD 16. For in this year, Giddianhi, leader of the band of Gadianton robbers at the time, sends a threatening letter to Lachoneus, demanding surrender of the Nephites, and threatening their destruction if they didn't. Lachoneus was surprised at this, but not scared, and commanded his people to gather together in one place, and built defenses, by which to defend themselves against the robbers. He also called the people to repent and turn to the Lord, to build up their spiritual defenses, which act was so effective that the people actually listen and repent and obey. He also appointed captains to lead their armies, the leader of which went by the name of Gidgiddoni. (sourcetext|source=Book of Mormon|book=3 Nephi|chapter=3|verse=|range=) He, together with Lachoneus, went on to win the war against the robbers, and bring peace to the land. (See sourcetext|source=Book of Mormon|book=3 Nephi|chapter=6|verse=6|range=.)

If anything else transpired, it is not recorded, and Lachoneus expired about AD 30, to be succeeded by his son, whose name was also Lachoneus.

Lachoneus, son of Lachoneus

Lachoneus was also the name of the son of the previously mentioned Lachoneus, and succeeded his father as chief judge. His reign, however, only lasted the year, for the king-men had returned, and desired to replace the chief judge with a king, but only ended up assassinating the chief judge. Thereafter the government fell apart. (See sourcetext|source=Book of Mormon|book=3 Nephi|chapter=6|verse=9|range=ff, and sourcetext|source=Book of Mormon|book=3 Nephi|chapter=7|verse=1|range=-4|nobook=.)

If any kings, judges, or other rulers among the Nephites followed Lachoneus II, they are not known to us.
