Chewing lice (Mallophaga) have nearly 3000 species and represent the larger of the two traditional suborders of lice (cf. sucking lice). Recent classifications suggest that this group is paraphyletic and divide the Mallophaga into three separate suborders:

*Amblycera
*Ischnocera
*Rhyncophthirina
