Shasta High School is an American public high school located in Redding, California. With an enrollment of over 1600 students, it is the largest high school in Shasta County, California. The school's mascot is the wolf.

Academics

Shasta High School is known as one of the best schools in its area for academics (in the top 1000 nationally according to Newsweek). It offers language classes in French, Spanish, and American Sign Language. A Chinese and Russian class will also be offered through University Prep. School (beginning in the '07-'08 school year), which is located within walking distance of the Shasta High campus. It is well-known for its successful Advanced Placement department and received the best scores in the region on national tests. The current advanced placement programs offered are: English Composition, English Literature, US History, US Government and Politics, Macroeconomics, Psychology, Biology, Physics, French Language, Spanish Language, European History, Statistics, and Calculus. Shasta also offers an MCM (Medical Career Magnet) program for students interested in medical careers. In addition to the advanced placement program for upper classmen, there is an honors program, which does not give college placement, but is close to AP level work. A Humanities course is also offered for sophomores and juniors. The majority of students take college preparatory classes.

Music

Shasta High School is also known for its music department. Its band, orchestra and choir perform several concerts each year in the Redding area and also travel. Since the 1960s they have collaborated on two major events each year; a madrigal dinner and a musical. The musical for 2008 will be "Les Miserables". There are five different choirs in the music program. Every four years the choir travels to various countries in Europe, singing in cathedrals along the way. The most advanced group in the music program is the Madrigal singers, who are featured at the Madrigal dinner and are hired to sing at various functions around town throughout the year. The band also performs at each year's graduation ceremony, at home varsity football games and the May rodeo parade each year, and for the first time in a long time they participated in the Christmas parade in 2006. The jazz band was restarted in about 2002 and it also gives many performances each year. In 2007 the Band Instructor added a Jr. Jazz band for Freshman learning to play other instruments and preparing them to join the Jazz Band. . The music program also includes string and wind ensembles. The two instructors for the Music Program are Mr. Polcari (band, jazz band and orchestra) and Mr. Spencer (choir's).

Shasta High School has a variety of sports teams, including basketball, football, baseball, swimming, skiing/snowboarding, track/cross-country, cheerleading, golf, tennis and wrestling. It also participates in the National Science Bowl and was involved in the local TV game show Academic Challenge until it was canceled in 2005. There are also a variety of student clubs which meet at lunch and after school such as student government and model united nations.

River Bowl

Shasta High School’s main rival is Enterprise High School (Redding, California). The Rivalry of Enterprise High and Shasta high started back in the 1950s, when both school's would steal the others "prized" possession. For Shasta High School it was the Shasta High Bell. Another side story is that Shasta's bell was stolen one fateful night, hidden for almost a decade, and then found after a drug raid in nearby Palo Cedro. The football game would later be called the Riverbowl. Enterprise and Shasta compete in the Riverbowl, an annual football game between the two rivals. The tradition was started in 1993, with Enterprise dominating the first 11 years. In 2004, Shasta won the Riverbowl and held their title in 2005.

The competition for the Riverbowl trophy commenced once again on October 12, 2007, where in an exciting and closely matched game, the Shasta Wolfpack won the Riverbowl with a score of 24-17.

Clubs

A large amount of clubs are available to the students of Shasta High School. These clubs include Interact club, Student Union, Mock Trial, Spanish and French club, Science and Math club, Art club, Mad Mudders, Anime club, F.B.L.A. club, Gay Straight Alliance, Christian club, F.N.L. club, Key club, Shasta Dance Team, Student's Against Genocide, Drama club, Croquet club, and SWWBA (School Wide Wall Ball Association)

Famous Alumni

Canadian Football League standout quarterback Ricky Ray attended school and played football for Shasta. He has since led the Edmington Eskimoes to two Grey Cup championships, winning Grey Cup MVP honors each time.

Film producer Kathleen Kennedy graduated from Shasta High School, before going on to produce movies such as Jurassic Park and E.T.

Greg Gibson, who graduated from Shasta High, later went on to wrestle at the University of Oregon where he became an All-American and NCAA place winner.
