The story of the game mirrors that of ' and ' for the GameCube while the gameplay follows "" for the Game Boy Advance. The Harvest Goddess has been petrified and sent to another world by the Witch Princess, and it is up to the player to restore her. In "Magical Melody", this is done by collecting magical music notes, but in Harvest Moon: DS, the player must find and rescue the Harvest Sprites from the other world by doing various tasks. Once the player finds 60 out of 101 sprites, the goddess will be revived, and the player will be able to propose to any of the potential wives.

Gameplay

Crops and Trees

Growing crops in this game is slightly different from the other Harvest Moon games. You are not restricted to only your farm land to grow crops. Instead, fields of various sizes are all over the map and different growth rates are applied to each. Each field has its own fertility level; the more fertile the faster your crops grow.

Animals

The player starts with a dog and a cat as pets. Later, he or she may get a horse, which can be ridden and used for farm work. Livestock includes cows, chickens, and sheep, which can produce milk, eggs, and wool respectively.

Marriage

In order to get married,you need to find 60 Harvest Sprites.The potential wives in Harvest Moon DS are as follows:
* Muffy, a blonde who works at the Blue Bar with Griffin.
* Nami, a redheaded worldly traveler who was hardened by hard times.
* Celia, a traditional, brown-haired farm girl who works for Vesta on a farm.
* Lumina, the classy and demure brunette granddaughter of Romana.
* Flora, a a blonde woman with glasses who works with Carter at the dig site.
* Harvest Goddess, the goddess who has been sealed in stone and sent away by her rival, the Witch Princess.
* Witch Princess, a mischievous rival to the Harvest Goddess.
* Leia the Mermaid, a mermaid who is rescued by someone.
* Keira, a mute princess sealed away in a mine because of a spell casted by the Witch Princess.

Cooking

The player has the ability to cook various recipies once he or she purchases a kitchen.

Glitches

Like almost all Natsume games, Harvest Moon DS has serious glitches, such as the infamous Billion Dollar Glitch, a glitch caused by hiring fishing sprites in the winter. Even though such glitches may work for some versions of the game, it is known to destroy the player's saved game in most cases.

You can marry both the Harvest Goddess and Witch Princess in the Japanese and European version of the game. Some of the US versions are glitched and neither the Goddess nor the Witch can be married because of missing items and a tally function not working correctly. However, Version 1.1 and later releases of the US version have this glitch corrected. To find out what US version a particular cartridge is, look at the serial number on the back of the cartridge. The glitched game has ABCEN0J13, ABCEN0J20 or ABCEN0J12 written on the back. The corrected versions have either ABCEN1J09, ABCEN1J11, ABCEN1J22 or later on the back.

Furthermore, if a Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town or Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town cartridge is inserted into the Game Boy Advance slot and the player loads up Harvest Moon DS, the bachelorettes from Mineral Town become available to be wed. However, the credits roll immediately after the wedding thus bringing the game to an end. After the credits finish, the game will return to the save previous to getting married. This feature was removed from the European version of the game.
