Plant Bowen

Plant Bowen is a coal-fired, steam-turbine electric generating facility located in Euharlee, GA - approximately 9 miles WSW from Cartersville, GA. Bowen ranked 3rd in the nation for net generation in 2006 producing over 22,630,000 MWh. Plant Bowen is connected to the southeastern U.S. Power grid by numerous 500KV transmission lines.

Bowen's 4 cooling towers are 380 feet tall and 317 feet in diameter and can cool 300,000 gallons of water every 60 seconds. Another 7,000 gallons of water is lost to evaporation which creates the distinctive white clouds rising from each tower.

Bowen's 2 smokestacks are 1000 feet tall. Particulates are removed from the exhaust gases through the use of electrostatic precipitators. The exhaust gases are then closely monitored with state-of-the-art equipment to comply with air quality regulations. In addition, SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) units have recently been constructed on all 4 units to meet federal clean air and ozone standards.

In 2006, Bowen was the largest emitter of sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere (at 206,442 tons) in the U.S., and ranked 39th worst in the nation in terms of sulfur dioxide emissions per kilowatt-hour of electricity produced. [cite web

] All 4 units at Bowen are scheduled for scrubber installations. Through such efforts, SO2 emissions will be reduced by as much as 95%. Construction began in 2005 on the first two of four Bowen scrubbers and will take three years to complete. The scrubbers at Bowen will be among the largest fiberglass vessels ever to be built in the United States.

The Bowen plant is the third largest producer of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) via power generation in the United States (after Plant Scherer and James H. Miller Jr. Power Plant), emitting 20.5 million tons of CO2 in the atmosphere each year. Data from CARMA (www.CARMA.org) http://carma.org/plant/detail/5461

Plant Bowen is owned and operated by Georgia Power Company, a subsidiary of Southern Company.
