Prairie Lea Independent School District

Prairie Lea Independent School District is a public school district based in the community of Prairie Lea, Texas (USA).

Located in Caldwell County, a small portion of the district extends into Guadalupe County.

Prairie Lea ISD has one school that serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve who reside in the communities of Fentress, Prairie Lea, Stairtown, and the surrounding area

As of September 2006, school enrollment reflected a population of 241 students.

Students in pre-kindergarten through first grade attend self-contained classes for core classes as well as elective courses in Spanish, Music, Physical Education, Technology, Art, and Brainstorm (a course in critical thinking activities).

Students in second grade through sixth grade attend cross-grade level flexible grouping classes for mathematics, writing, reading, and science. Each flexible group also attends a daily center's class that reinforces all core subjects. Students receive homogenous grade-level specific instruction for social studies and health. Groupings change in nine week increments based upon each individual student's performance on benchmark and portfolio assessments.

Elective courses for students in second grade through sixth mirror that of students in grades pre-kindergarten through first.

Secondary students (grades 7-12) attend classes on a modified block plan - three courses on an "A" day, three courses on a "B" day, and two courses that occur daily for a total of eight annual possible course credits. The district also participates in distance learning courses on an as-needed basis.

Secondary student electives include Art, Web Design, Keyboarding, Drama, Woodshop, Building Trades, Small Engine Repair, Teacher Experience, Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III, Journalism, Advanced Mathematics and Science Courses, SAT/ACT Prep, Consumer Education (homemaking), Teen Leadership, Advanced Personal Fitness, Recreational Sports, football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, track and field, and cross country.

Prairie Lea I.S.D. accepts transfers from other districts based upon the recommendations of the district transfer committee. The district assesses a per pupil transfer fee of $250.00 to partially cover administrative costs. On a as space is available basis, the transfer committee uses an attendance and behavioral performance rubric to assist in transfer approval assessment. In addition to the locally developed rubric, the district must comply with state standards that require certain demographic balance percentages be maintained.

In the fall of 1938, Prairie Lea and Martindale (now defunct) played the first ever six-man football game in the State of Texas, as a demonstration game for the University Interscholastic League (the coordinating organization for academic and athletic competitions in the State of Texas). Prairie Lea would discontinue its football program in the late 1950's, but would resume play in the fall of 2001.
