Evelyn Danzig

Evelyn Danzig Levine (January 16, 1902-July 26, 1996) was an American songwriter best known for writing the music to for the popular folk song, "Scarlet Ribbons", which was recorded by Harry Belafonte, Jo Stafford, Perry Como, Dinah Shore, Joan Baez, The Kingston Trio, Wayne Newton, Danny Thomas and Sinéad O'Connor, among many others. Nana Mouskouri also sang it in French, under the title "Rubans Rouges".

The song came to life in 1949, at Danzig's home in Port Washington, New York, where she collaborated with lyricist Jack Segal. She went on to collaborate with Segal on many other songs, including "Where I May Live With My Love", "The Wonder of Wonderful You", "When a Warmhearted Women Loves a Cold-hearted Man" and "Midnight in Manhattan".

In the 1930s, she had her own radio program out of New York City, called "Treble and Clef". She also wrote two operas, "Hester" and "Three for Tonight", for Harry Belafonte.

Danzig, the youngest of six children born to Ethel and Morris Danzig (from Danzig), was born in Texas. She was the sister of Allison Danzig, a noted sportswriter for The New York Times from 1923 through 1967.

She was married to Manuel W. Levine, who was the District Attorney for Nassau County, New York from 1959 to 1963, before beginning service as a State Supreme Court judge in Mineola, New York. Evelyn Levine died in 1996 in Los Angeles, California.
