Lisa Brokop (born June 6, 1973 in Surrey, British Columbia) is a Canadian country music singer/songwriter and actress. Active since 1990 in the country music field, she has released a total of six studio albums, and has charted more than twenty singles on the country music charts in her native Canada. Several of these singles have also crossed over to the American country music charts, although she has not entered Top 40 in the U.S., with her highest charting songs being "Give Me a Ring Sometime" and "Take That" peaking at both #52 in 1994. Her highest chart single to date is the #8 "Better Off Broken" from 1999 in Canada.

Career

Early career

Beginning her musical career at age seven in her native B.C., Brokop went professional at age fifteen. She graduated from Princess Margaret Secondary School in 1991 [Princess Margaret Secondary 1990-1991 Student class album, page 88] and then moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

1990-1993: Libre Records

In 1991, at seventeen, Brokop won a Canadian songwriting contest that was only the first of many accolades. As a direct result, later that same year she released her first album "My Love", on Libre Records. This record featured Brokop's first radio single, "Daddy, Sing to Me". The album also contained the songs "Country Girl" and "Time to Come Back Home," which were featured in the Genie Award nominated motion picture "Harmony Cats", a movie in which Brokop also acted. (An album of the Harmony Cats soundtrack was later released).

1994-1996: Capitol Records

Brokop later signed with Capitol Records under the Liberty imprint which led to the release of two albums in three years. The first of these was "Every Little Girl's Dream" in 1994.

The self-titled album "Lisa Brokop" was produced in 1996, producing two successful singles: "Before He Kissed Me" and "She Can't Save Him." At a comparatively early age, Brokop had achieved considerable Nashville success, but the effort had left her suffering from burn out. [ [http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/brokop_lisa/bio.jhtml Lisa Brokop at CMT] ] Brokop ended her relationship with Capitol later in 1996 and took some time off to work on her own songwriting.

Capitol Records re-released Brokop's two Capitol albums, "Lisa Brokop" and "Every Little Girl's Dream", to most online music download services on February 26, 2008.

1998-1999: Columbia Records

Her next album, the 1998 release "When You Get to Be You" was released by Columbia Records and displayed the growth and determination of Brokop as an artist. The release did well in Canada, but singles from the album performed poorly on US charts, ultimately causing Columbia not to release the album in the United States.

2000-2004: Cosmo Records

"Undeniable" was released in 2000. This record begins upbeat with "I'd Like to See You Try", slows down with "Keep Mom and Dad in Love" (a duet with Hal Ketchum), and rolls into "Something Undeniable", a strong track which has become a fan favorite. Other tracks include "Say", "Don't Believe Me", and "Dark Side of the Moon."

2005-2006: Curb Records

Lisa Brokop's latest release is the 2005 album "Hey, Do You Know Me" Described as a culmination of her life experience, it is a presentation of compelling music and gripping lyrics beginning with the title-track and also containing "Wildflower" and "Pearl" a story of forgiveness.

Brokop and Kim McLean wrote the 2007 European Country Music Association hit single "Band in the Window" sung by Pam Tillis. Brokop departed Curb Records in August 2006.

2008-present: Ellbea Music

After a three year break, Lisa Brokop went back in the studio recording her next album, "Beautiful Tragedy". The album includes twelve tracks, including the first single released in Canada, "Break It," and is co-produced by Lisa Brokop. The album was released in Canada on August 19, 2008. The album also features the Brokop penned "Band in the Window," previously recorded and released by Pam Tillis. It was the first single from her 2007 album "RhineStoned".Lisa Brokop will be touring in 2009 to support the release.

"November Trees" has been chosen as Brokop's next single from the "Beautiful Tragedy" album. The single will be released in October 2008. Lisa also partnered with CMT Canada to do this video, which was shot in Vancouver.

Awards and Nominations

In 1995, Brokop received the Academy of Country Music nomination for Top New Female Vocalist, but lost to Chely Wright.

In 2003, she was awarded the title of Independent Female Artist of the Year at the Canadian County Music Awards (CCMAs).

In August 2006, the Canadian Country Music Association announced Brokop was nominated for the Canadian Country Music Award for Female Artist of the Year. This was Brokop's ninth consecutive nomination in this category, and going back to 1993, Brokop has been nominated a total of 13 times for Female Artist of the Year. Personal life

Lisa Brokop married her boyfriend of four years, Paul Jefferson, a fellow musician and producer in the spring of 2008. ['Music: If It's Brokop, don't fix it,' The Now Newspaper, Friday September 26, 2008, pp.A21-A22 (web site: www.the nownewspaper.com)] Jefferson helped Brokop "shape the stripped-down songs of [the album] "Beautiful Tragedy" in the couple's Nashville home studio." [The Now Newspaper, op. cit., p.A21] Brokop notes that she and a small band are planning "to tour Canada's western provinces next January and February [2009] , with a possible stop in Surrey."
