The Highway Men

"The Highway Men", a 2006 science fiction novella by Ken MacLeod, plays out in the Scottish Highlands in a near future dominated by war with China and by climate-change.

Plot summary

Analysis

A very short book, at only 70 pages, "The Highway Men" has many of the features that distinguish Macleod's work: heroes with an anarchist/libertarian bent, a sceptical attitude towards government, and anti-authoritarian insurrection. The book appears as one of a series called "Sandstone Vista", which the publishers describe as "developed for readers who are not used to reading full length novels, or for those who simply want to enjoy a ‘quick read’ which is satisfying and well written". Macleod uses fairly simple language and structure to fulfill this aim.
