The nine municipalities of the Kainuu Region in Finland are divided to form two sub-regions.

Kajaani sub-region

1. Kajaani (Kajana)
2. Vaala
3. Paltamo
4. Ristijärvi
5. Sotkamo

Kehys-Kainuu sub-region

6. Kuhmo
7. Suomussalmi
8. Hyrynsalmi
9. Puolanka

Former municipalities

  • Kajaanin maalaiskunta (merged with Kajaani in 1977)
  • Säräisniemi (formed Vaala with a part of Utajärvi in 1954)
  • Vuolijoki (merged with Kajaani in 2007)
