Ebor Handicap

Ebor Handicap

The Ebor Handicap is a flat horse race in the United Kingdom open to thoroughbreds which are three-years-old or above. It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs (2,816 metres) at York Racecourse, and it takes place annually during the Ebor Festival meeting in August.

It was first run in 1843, and it is presently the most valuable handicap race of its kind in Europe. Prior to 2007 the regular distance of the race was 1 mile 5 furlongs and 197 yards (2,795 metres).

In 2008 the entire Ebor meeting was cancelled at York due to a waterlogged track. This race was replaced by the Newburgh Handicap at Newbury Racecourse. "Newburgh" is the original Norman name of Newbury.
