X1 Technologies, Inc.

X1 Technologies, Inc.

X1 Technologies, Inc. is a privately held software company based in Pasadena, California, that develops and markets products for enterprise search.

History

X1 Technologies was founded in 2003 to help business users easily access and act upon information that resides anywhere on a desktop or the corporate enterprise. X1 Technologies was an early leader in the desktop search space with the launch of their flagship product, X1 Desktop Search, which garnered several industry awards. The original desktop search product was licensed to approximately 22,000 users, mostly purchased at $100 or $50 through the company's [http://www.x1.com Web site] .

X1's user interface is known for its "find-as-you-type" search experience. This patented technology enables the results list to narrow as each letter of the search term is typed or an entry is made in the metadata field without requiring the user to press the search button again. Result details are listed in the left pane of the interface, and a preview of the file or email is displayed in the right pane. X1 searches many file types (over 400 in all), including email, Outlook and enterprise applications such as Oracle and Symantec Enterprise Vault even if the user does not have the associated application installed on their PC.

In late 2005, X1 announced its Enterprise Edition (now X1 Enterprise Search Suite) solution, which consists of a network-based indexing server that delivers results to the Desktop Edition (now X1 Professional Client) or via a browser client interface. The release of X1 Enterprise Edition marked X1's entry into the enterprise search market. This product enables server based indexing of shared network drives, Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Lotus Notes, Oracle and other content repositories.

X1 has been listed as one of [http://www.kmworld.com/ KMWorld] ’s “100 Companies That Matter in Knowledge Management” and as one of Gartner’s “Cool Vendors in the High Performance Workplace”. Version 4 of the X1 client was named in PC Magazine's Best of 2004 list, and won a [http://www.x1.com/link.html?http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1744110,00.asp PC Magazine Technical Excellence Award] in 2004

X1 has partnered with and powered search initiatives for IBM, Yahoo! and EarthLink. Headquartered in Pasadena, California, X1 Technologies is an operating company of Idealab, and is backed by [http://www.usvp.com/home.html U.S. Venture Partners] .

Products

The complete X1 Platform consists of:
* X1 Professional Client, the core end user interface
* X1 Enterprise Server, for high-speed, scalable search access to enterprise repositories
* X1 Deployment Manager, for central control and deployment of the Client
* X1 Cluster Manager, an administration tool for Enterprise Servers
* X1 Browser Client, enables remote users and supports zero-footprint deployment for the X1 Enterprise Server
* X1 Content Connectors, specific integrations for widely-used information repositories
* X1 Client and Server SDKs, developer APIs to build integrations with unique sources

X1 Professional Client

The X1 Professional Client lets an individual PC user search across all of the content he or she has access to, shows the user a preview of the search result and then gives them many options to take action on the file. X1 lets end users search over 400 information formats and the most commonly used email clients, using common search characters and terms, keywords or Boolean search. End users can search, sort by any parameter and preview search results in original formats, including media. The 30-day trial version of the X1 Professional Client [http://www.x1.com/download] enables search of all local content on the hard drive, including personal mailboxes. Customers, usually businesses, who use the full X1 Enterprise Client gain the ability to search network repositories through the X1 Enterprise Server.

X1 Enterprise Server

The X1 Enterprise Server indexes the content housed in multiple information repositories, then federates search results and delivers them. End users see enterprise search results via a common interface and can take action from within the X1 interface. The X1 Enterprise Server integrates into the existing security infrastructure for seamless access.

X1 Deployment Manager

The X1 Deployment Manager lets IT administrators customize and deploy the X1 Enterprise Client across the [network] . The Deployment Manager is compatible with Microsoft SMS, Windows Script Host and other popular enterprise deployment tools. Enterprise Clients can be deployed “silently” to minimize impact on end users.

X1 Cluster Manager

Administrators may “dial up” performance and capacity using the X1 Cluster Manager to drag-and-drop indexing engines or connection engines. Administrators can remotely configure and install each of the components in the X1 Enterprise Server and monitor the performance and activities of the entire cluster. They can scale X1 to support large enterprise deployments.

X1 Browser Client

The X1 Browser Client runs on Internet Explorer and Firefox and supports mobile and remote office access. The Browser Client maps to end users’ existing permissions and can be extended or customized to fit within existing portal or intranet systems to preserve a company’s standard look and feel.

X1 Content Connectors

Content Connectors are client and server-side software modules that allow X1’s indexing engine to index and act on specific enterprise information systems. The Content Connector for Files provides access to over 400 different types of document and data file formats that are fully indexed by the X1 Enterprise Server. The Content Connector for Microsoft Exchange and Outlook allow users to index, search and take action on email messages, attachments, calendar entries, tasks and contacts. The Content Connector for Interwoven WorkSite gives users unified access across multiple WorkSite repositories, email and documents. Additional connectors are available for popular applications such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Lotus Notes and Symantec Enterprise Vault.

X1 Software Development Kits (SDKs)

X1 SDKs let developers create customized client integrations and/or content connectors. The X1 Client SDK lets customers extend and customize the X1 Enterprise Client and integrate it with other [Windows] desktop applications. The X1 Server SDK lets customers extend the X1 Enterprise Server to index additional enterprise data sources such as a proprietary workflow system or a CRM system.
