Batz-sur-Mer is a commune of the Loire-Atlantique "département" in France.

History

In 945, the Duke of Brittany, Alain Barbe-Torte founded a priory in Batz-sur-Mer, dedicated to saint Guénolé. The Benedictines developed the region, devoting themselves to cultures and maintenance of the salt ponds.

In 1834, Balzac stayed in the commune, with Laure de Berny, at the "Calme Logis" of Madame de La Valette. He wrote there "Un drame au bord de la mer" [ [http://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Un_drame_au_bord_de_la_mer "Un drame au bord de la mer"] ] , which take place in Le Croisic.
