Qu Yi

Qu Yi

Chinese
t=麴義
s=麴义

Qu Yi was an officer serving under Yuan Shao during the later years of the Han Dynasty of China. Following the Battle of Jieqiao, Qu Yi took the high position of controlling the central army. During this battle Qu Yi managed to slay Gongsun Zan's officer Yan Gang and is a great asset to Yuan's army. It is said that Qu Yi was purged from the court by Yuan Shao due to his exceeding arrogance. In the novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", Qu Yi is killed in the Battle of Jieqiao by Zhao Yun during the counterattack by Gongsun Zan's army.

Extension

Chinese usually put their family name in the first place and consequent with first name, so Qu is actually his family name and Yi is the first name.

After Qu Yi was killed (or purged), his family successfully escaped from Yuan Shao, and changed their family name from 麴 to 曲(which means injustice or crooked).
