Bagnall 0-4-0ST "Alfred" and "Judy"

Alfred and Judy are two unusually low 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotives built by W.G. Bagnall.

They were built for shunting duties at the Port of Par where they shunted china clay wagons around Par docks and also to and from the clay driers at Par Moor. These were located on the far side of the Cornish Main Line, and to reach them trains had to pass beneath a low bridge which meant the locomotives had to be built to an extremely low loading gauge. The locomotives' cabs have a very low floor and roof, allowing an unusually low overall height for a standard gauge locomotive.

"Judy" was built in 1936 and withdrawn from service in 1969. "Alfred" was built to the same design in 1953 to replace a vertical boilered Sentinel locomotive and was withdrawn in 1978.

Alfred was painted yellow, Judy green.

Preservation

These locomotives have been preserved at the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Alfred and Judy can be seen running under the guise as "Bill" and "Ben" for "Day Out with Thomas" events.

In fiction

"Alfred" and "Judy" form the basis of Bill and Ben, two characters from The Railway Series by Rev.W.Awdry. Both characters have also featured in Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends TV Series .
