Kakatiya Medical College

The Kakatiya Medical College provides medical education in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, India.

It is located in the city of Warangal, an important city in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. Warangal is about 136 km from the state's capital Hyderabad. It is well connected to most of the state via roads and railways.

History

Kakatiya Medical College was founded in 1959 by the Warangal Regional Medical Education society with the active support of the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, the Director of Medical services, and the Warangal District Collector, to provide Medical education for students of the Telangana region of the state.

The College was inaugurated on 23 July 1959 by the Honourable Sri P. Karnakar, Minister of Health, Government of India. It was originally located in a building donated by the Pingile family at Waddepally and it moved into the make-shift buildings constructed at the permanent site in November 1961.

152.17 acres of land was acquired for the medical college in Warangal and the permanent building of the college was constructed at an estimated cost of about Rs. 47 lakhs. Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, inaugurated the permanent campus in 1966.

Currently it is the one of the premier medical institutes of Andhra Pradesh, taking in 150 students each year through a competitive examination called the EAMCET (Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test) held throughout Andhra Pradesh.

Currently the principal of the college is Dr.Surendar. The superintendent of the affliated hospital is Dr. Raghuram, an orthopaedician.

The College has a large campus comprising staff quarters, a library, a hostels for ladies, for men and the Rayudu hostel for boys. There are good sports facilities for football, basketball, cricket and other sports. It also houses an Auditorium where functions are held.
