Upleta is a city and a municipality in Rajkot district in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Geography

Upleta is located at coord|21.73|N|70.28|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/9/Upleta.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Upleta] ] . It has an average elevation of 39 metres (127 feet).

Upleta is a town located about 19 km from Dhoraji, in the Rajkot District of Gujarat, on the banks of the Moj River. With its high fort wall, huge bastions, gates and small ghats and the skyline of the buildings, Upleta has a picturesque composition. Some major points of attraction here are a mosque, a Jain temple, and a temple of Mojeshwar Mahadev. It was famous for its water-supply tank in old Darbargadh which was unique for its era. The Darbargadh, now a police station, is enclosed within a fortified campus. Upleta has a high-quality drainage system, which helps to prevent flooding during monsoon season. The city is also well-known for its high-quality road system.

In the middle of the city there is a ststue of "Maharaja Bhagvadsinghji". This area is called "Bapu Na Bavla"(statue) "chowk".

Demographics

As of 2006 India census [GR|India] , Upleta had a population of 56,354. The population is mainly a mixture of Hindu and Muslim. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Upleta has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 65%. In Upleta, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

It was formerly ruled by Gondal Maharaja before independence. Along with Gondal, Dhoraji it was one of the major towns of Gondal state.

Major crops are groundnuts, cotton, and castor.

* In early days after independence day, and till late 90's Upleta was a major shopping hub for the several nearby villages, where they came and shopped their groceries and other livelihood materials. It was also famous for its clothing shops and other garments. Villagers right from places like Khajurda, Khatli, Sodvadar, Timbdi, Roghel, Khijadia, Sajdiyali, Dhank, Khirsara, Chitravad, Charel, Arni, Supedi, Moti Marad and several other villages used to come here and shop before other smaller towns were developed.

Transportation

Train station:Upleta Railway Station is on the Vansjaliya-Jetalsar-Dhasha line. Currently it is Narrow gauge and in transformation phase for Broad Gauge It is under the administrative control of the Western Railways. The nearest main station to the west is Wansjaliya Railway Station; to the east, Jetalsar Junction Railway Station is the nearest main station.

Airport:Nearest Airport: Rajkot, Keshod and Porbandar are the nearest Airport.

Bus station:Upleta Bus station is located in Rajkot District, Gujarat. Upleta is on National Highway (Indian highways) 8B. The station connects Upleta with Rajkot, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Gondal and Jetpur. Many private bus operators provides the service too.

Other Transportation:
Diesel Rickshaws (Locally called: Thathiya) as shown in "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" is one of the most handy transportation vehicle.
