History
Not much is known about the medieval history of Pachora. It is an island, between two branches of the river 'Hivara'. According to local folk tales of the Katha-Kalptaru sect, Pandawas stayed in Pachora for several days after Bhima killed Bakasura. The town has had many names but Pachora was given to this town by 'Shri Chakradhar Swami', 900 years ago, when traveling through the area with his devotees - Mahandaieca Dhampecia, Mahimbhat & Nagdev Acharya. When he reached Pachora, he went to a poor blacksmith's house and asked the women of the house for a chupatti for dinner. The women had already cooked dinner, not expecting guests, but she gave all they had to the swami. Swami returned back some chapattis and blessed the women. It is from this exchange that the town's name derives.
Pachora participated in the 'Go-Back' National Movement and the freedom movement. In Pachora on 9 Aug 1942 at 'Gandhi Chowk', British officers fired on people in the freedom movement. Two people died and nine were injured. Mahatma Gandhi visited Pachora twice for peace conferences.
