The Warehouse (Syracuse)

The Warehouse in Downtown Syracuse, New York, United States, is a former storage warehouse of the Syracuse-based Dunk and Bright Furniture Company. It was purchased in 2005 by Syracuse University ["SU Plans 'Historic' Move Downtown - College Aims For Community Connections", The Post-Standard, 12 December 2004] , which renovated the building for classroom, gallery [http://www.thewarehousegallery.org] , and studio use at a cost of $9 million ["SU Set to Celebrate Armory Square Site - The Warehouse Provides a New Home for Some of the University's Arts Programs", The Post-Standard, 29 April 2006] . The renovation was designed by Syracuse alumnus Richard Gluckman of Gluckman Mayner Architects. It currently houses the university's School of Architecture while its headquarter building, Slocum Hall on SU's Main Campus, is being renovated. After the School of Architecture returns to the Main Campus in the fall of 2008, the facility will house other SU departments and programs. In addition, the Goldring Arts Journalism Program and the College of Visual and Performing Arts' communications and advertising design programs are headquartered in the building. The design firm that developed the renovation was recently honored for their work on the Warehouse.

Layout

The ground floor--housing a cafe, reading room, community classrooms & work spaces, a community exhibition space and an international contemporary art gallery--is the most public area in the warehouse. The first floor is home to the School of Architecture's main offices, a large lecture space and a small bookstore. Floor two is a climate-controlled storage space for the SU library. The third floor is home to the Visual and Performing Art's Advertising Design and Communications Design programs, with floors four through seven used for the School of Architecture, in the form of offices, classrooms, and studio space. Part of Warehouse's basement contains a model shop, laser cutters, spray booths, and a "dirty room" for messy projects.
