The Vinyl Skyway

The Vinyl Skyway

The Vinyl Skyway is an independent American rock band based in the Boston, MA area. A founding member of the popular alt-country band ' [http://www.myspace.com/lemonpeeler Lemonpeeler] ', Michael Hayes began collaborating with multi-instrumentalist and composer [http://www.andysantospago.com Andrew Santospago] in 2003, when the two formed 'The Vinyl Skyway'. Their [http://www.cdbaby.com/vinylskyway eponymous debut] was released in 2004.

The group's style is best described as derivative to classic sixties icons the Beatles, the Beach Boys and Alex Chilton, with vintage analog sounds and Pet Sounds-influenced harmonies. Other comparisons include Teenage Fan Club, early Wilco or the Jayhawks. In addition to Hayes and Santospago, the current group includes drummer Booth Hardy, bassist Rob Pevitts, and pianist Dave Lieb. In 2007, the Vinyl Skyway released a sophomore CD entitled [http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com/node/5107 From Telegraph Hill] which was described by the [http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2006/12/22/time_to_put_the_top_down/ Boston Globe] as "lush, summery music in the vein of the Thrills, Pernice Brothers and Lindsey-Buckingham era Fleetwood Mac."

Lead singer and songwriter Michael Hayes spans the landscape of material from melancholy love songs [http://www.cdbaby.com/vinylskyway2 Lovely Day] to political diatribes about corporate fascism in America [http://www.myspace.com/thevinylskyway Deadly] .

The name Vinyl Skyway was derived from a song by Paul Westerberg (former lead singer of the Replacements) called "Skyway." Michael Hayes was raised in the twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota where skyways are common (connecting buildings to protect from the cold). It is also a reference to the vinyl LP.

The Vinyl Skyway perform most frequently in [http://www.lizardloungeclub.com Cambridge, MA] , though have also made appearances on the West coast in San Francisco, LA and Seattle, Chicago, and New York City. In November 2001, Hayes' first band Lemonpeeler toured the United States, performing 18 shows in three weeks at venues including Nashville's Bluebird, Chicago's Schuba's and Abbey Pub, and Minneapolis' Fine Line.
