Gábor Egressy (actor)

Gábor Egressy [IPA|ˈgaːbor ˈɛgrɛʃi] (circa 1808 in Sajólaszlófalva in the former Komitat Borsod; - 30 July 1866 in Pest) was a Hungarian actor and brother of Béni Egressy.

Life

His exact date of birth is not known. After he belonged to several rover actor ensembles, he found at the theater in Klausenburg a permanent engagement. Later he fulfilled his artistic education in Vienna and was since 1837 one of the most important actors at the new opened Hungarian National Theater in Pest.

He was responsible for bringing the dramas of William Shakespeare to the Hungarian stage in his mother tongue.

In the turbulent revolution of 1848 and 1849 he was sent as a government commissar to the lower-Tisza area, but was recalled for carrying out his duties too rigorously. He returned to the stage, but escaped to Turkey after the repression of the revolution. In 1854 he was allowed to return, exempt from punishment.
