Mookerjee was the first Indian to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree (from Calcutta University).Fact|date=July 2008 Mookerjee's doctorate was in English literature, and he went on to become a philanthropist, Vice-Chancellor for Calcutta University, Vice President of the Constituent Assembly of India, and Chairman of the Minorities Committee of that assembly.Cite web|url=http://darjeeling.gov.in/step-aside.html|title=Step Aside|accessyear=2008|accessmonthday=July 29|publisher=NIC, Darjeeling district centre|author=NIC, Darjeeling district centre]

Following the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly, Dr Mookerjee was appointed Governor of West Bengal. He died in office on August 8, 1956.
