Count Armand

Count Armand

Count Armand is a fictional character from the movie "The Legend of Zorro". He was played by actor Rufus Sewell.

Character overview

Armand is a wealthy count and knight who emigrated to California from France in 1850. He set himself up as a wine-maker and invited all kinds of guests over to his chateau for parties. During one of these parties, he had a special escort for the evening, who was none other than Elena De La Vega. Elena had recently divorced Alejandro, the masked avenger Zorro, and is living a life of freedom with her son Joaquin. It was there that the Count and Alejandro are introduced. Besides being a gentleman, Count Armand is also a member of an evil brotherhood known as "Orbis Unim," which is Latin for "One World." The brotherhood existed in medieval times, and were dedicated to keeping peace in Europe. Their forefathers predicted that the nascent United States would rise up to threaten the serpent of "Orbis Unim", and the world would be in jeopardy. For many years they planned a way to destroy this land before it got too powerful.

In the film

Armand contacts his brothers over in Europe informing them that he is on the verge of creating a new type of weapon, one that could destroy America. This of course is right before the American Civil War, so the future of the country is at stake. Zorro and Elena find Armand and the rest of "Orbis Unim" meeting in secret one night, discussing their plans. Armand tells them that he has discovered a way to created vast amounts of nitro glycerin, a relatively new type of explosive. By distributing the nitro to the Confederate army, the entire country would be torn apart, and all they would have to do was watch. The Order decides (with one dissenter, who is killed for his insubordination) that Armand's plan would be carried out to its natural conclusion.

Armand's scheme is foiled when his henchman, Mr.McGivens, fails to kill Zorro as he is ordered. Zorro then pursues Armand's train carring over 30 bottles of nitro glycerin. Zorro and Armand fight a fierce duel that leads from one of the cabin cars, to the front of the steam engine. Just when Armand is about to win, Elena appears and she and her husband get the upper hand. Zorro then ties Armand's neckerchief to the engine, and he and Elena escape from the train. In the end Armand's train crashes into a pair of broken buffers, taking him with it.
