National Heroes Day is a Saint Kitts and Nevis holiday observed annually on 16 September that honours individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the nation. As of 2011 there are three national heroes: Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Paul Southwell, and Joseph Nathaniel France.
History
National Heroes Day was established in 1996 by the Saint Kitts and Nevis Federal Parliament with the passage of the National Honours Act.[1] The first observance of the holiday was on 16 September 1998 to honor Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, the first Premier and Chief Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis and former labour activist.[2] The holiday is observed on his birthday.[3]
In 2004, former Premier and Chief Minister Paul Southwell, and former Social Services Minister and trade unionist Joseph Nathaniel France, were also affirmed as National Heroes by the National Assembly.[4]
