Planting strategy

Planting strategy

A strategy is 'a long term plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal'. For planting, this is the achievement of design objectives. The strategy will also comprise information on the species to be used and the planting techniques to be employed. For example, when planting trees and shrubs, the planting strategy will explain: the design objective (eg a visual screen or a shelter belt); the species to be used (eg "Populus x canadensis"); the method of establishment (e.g. seeding, whip planting, planting with advanced nursery stock); the method of maintenance (eg weeding, use of tree-spats, use of herbicides, application of fertilizer, irrigation, etc); the intended character of the planting at projected intervals into the future.
