Colin McKay (born August 29, 1975, in Saskatchewan) is a professional skateboarder[1] from North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Biography

McKay graduated from Handsworth Secondary School in 1992.[citation needed]

McKay began skating in 1986 and honed and progressed his skateboard skills at Kevin Harris' Richmond Skate Ranch. McKay was sponsored by Powell Peralta and made his video debut in the Bones Brigade Video 4, "Public Domain". McKay progressed quickly as an amateur vert skater and had a groundbreaking video part in Powell's 1990 film "Propaganda". His style of technical lip tricks helped progress vertical skateboarding, and McKay would remain a top amateur skater on the contest circuit until he turned professional in 1993.[citation needed]

Towards the end of 1991, McKay left Powell Peralta to join the preeminent Plan B Skateboards team, a new company formed by Mike Ternansky, Steve Rocco, and Danny Way. McKay's inclusion on Plan B helped him sustain a career in skateboarding during its drought in the early 1990s.[citation needed]

The 1992 Plan B video "Questionable" had compelling street skating parts from all of their team riders, including McKay, which raised the bar on his relevance. This formula was repeated for Plan B's next video "Virtual Reality" in 1993. Plan B would lose its dominance in the years following, but thanks to ESPN's X Games, top vert riders like McKay got to keep their profiles raised and their careers alive as skateboarding regained in popularity. Plan B closed its doors (when Mike Ternasky was killed in a car accident on 5/17/94) and McKay jumped to Girl Skateboards and then Seek Skateboards.[citation needed]

In 2005, McKay and Way resurrected Plan B.[2]

McKay remains a top force in the world of vertical skateboarding today and is an original rider and share-owner of the skateboard footwear company (DC Shoes), and is part owner of RDS (Red Dragon Skateboards), RDS Skate Supply, and Centre Distribution.[citation needed]
