Jon Rose

Jon Rose

Jon Rose (born 1951) is an Australian violinist. He consistently performs at numerous music festivals, and has appeared on over 60 albums, and worked with artists such as Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, Shelley Hirsh, Chris Cutler, Otomo Yoshihide, KK Null, Alvin Curran, Evan Parker, Phil Minton, John Cage, Tony Oxley, Steve Beresford, Eugene Chadbourne, Bob Ostertag, Jim Denley, Elliott Sharpe, and John Zorn.

Rose began playing violin at age 7 after winning a music scholarship to King's School in Rochester. At age 15 he gave up formal music education and travelled throughout England and Australia in the 1970s. He became part of Australia's improvised music scene, performing in The Relative Band.

In 1986 Rose moved to Berlin, where he developed his unique style of violin, which he termed 'the relative violin'. This development has incorporated experiments with instrument design, MIDI, radio transmissions, video art, and other media.

Rose has appeared at numerous music festivals throughout the world, including Strasbourg New Music Festival, New Music America, Moers New Jazz Festival, European Media Festival, The Vienne Festival, Ars Electronica, Northsea Jazz Festival, Dukumenta, Roma-Europa Festival, Festival D'Automne, Festival Musique Actuelle, and the Berlin Jazz Festival. Rose also curates his own festival, String 'Em Up, which focuses on innovative use of stringed instruments. The festival has travelled to Berlin, Rotterdam, New York, and Paris.

For over 20 years, Jon Rose has been bowing (and recording) singular sounds out of fences around the world, and since 2002 has been joined by Hollis Taylor in playing The Great Fences of Australia, part of the results of which having been presented Melbourne Festival 2002, and a future fence planned to be constructed using Just Intonation and the Fibonacci series.
