Why War? (organization)

Why War? (organization)

Why War?, originally started by students of Swarthmore College in October 2001, is an anti-war organization working to activate a broad, global movement for peace and justice based on the principles of nonviolence.

Mission

"Why War? works to activate a broad, global movement for peace and justice based on the principles of nonviolence. To this end, our work is focused on delivering vital news, analysis and strategy to those searching for an answer to the most pressing issue of today: Why War?" [http://why-war.org/]

Objectives

"Why War?" started as a response to the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks to try to communicate that "war was not the just nor proper response to 9/11."

Campaigns

The organization is most well-known for its involvement in the Diebold Election Systems (now Premier Election Solutions) electronic civil disobedience campaign [http://why-war.com/features/2003/10/diebold.html] .

"Why War?"s website is a compilation of tens of thousands of articles from both mainstream news outlets and obscure sources reporting on the various fronts of the war, critiquing the approach of the United States government, and offering perspectives on the direction of the anti-war movements within the United States and globally.

In 2005, the organization published an online journal, "Galeropia", "a journal of nonviolent theory and practice more potent than reliance on polemics and death." [http://galeropia.org/]
