Educational Initiatives

Educational Initiatives is a Ahmedabad based consultancy working in educational research and assessment in India.

The company is headed by IIM Graduates Sudhir Ghodke and Sridhar Rajagopalan and its aim is to promote an atmosphere of quality within India's primary school system. It pursues this by raising concerns related to the quality of learning, providing services related to assessment, professional development of teachers, curriculum and pedagogy, and influencing educational policy, especially in the realm of assessment. It takes a systems approach in order to improve the quality of learning. It uses a cycle of problem discovery, cause identification, solution implementation and feedback (which may lead to a deeper level of problem identification), a positive spiral towards improvement.

"What's wrong with our Teaching"

The company got significant media coverage (especially on India Today ["What's wrong with our Teaching", "India Today", 19 November 2006 ] ) when it released its study on the state of Indian education the children were getting in the 'top' schools in the five metros (Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore). The study found that even in the 'top' schools in India, the students seemed to learn mechanically and was only able to answer questions based on recall. It also found there were concerning levels of rote learning practiced in schools.
