landlocked country inEastern Europe , bordered by TheGrand Duchy of Lithuania to its west and byMuscovy to its east. The Principality of Trubetsk was aprincipality within modernBryansk Oblast , about 50mile s (80kilometre s) southwest ofBriańsk . A sub-principality underNowogród Siewierski , it was elevated to the status of independent principality1164 –1196 ,1202 –1211 ,1212 –1240 ,1357 –1566 .The Trubetsk town was founed in the era of
vikings . The official date of town foundation is975 . It referred in a great ancientRuthenia n poem, "The Tale of Igor's Campaign ". This poem called the princes of theSlavonic lands to join forces to resist the approachingTatar invasion . This poem also glorified the courage of army ofWsiewołod IV Czermny , the Prince of Trubetsk and ofKursk .Inhabitants of Trubetsk were famous for their bravery in military actions. In
1185 the Trubetsk army fought againstCumans (the common name of the nomadic tribes, who made a plundering raids toRuthenia ). That war was described in "The Tale of Igor's Campaign."In
1239 , after theMongol invasion of Rus , The Principality of Trubetsk passed to the Princes ofBriańsk , and then to the Princes of Trubetsk. In1566 Ivan IV the Terrible took the principality during theLivonian War . In1609 Vasili IV of Russia had to relinquish it to ThePolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during thePolish–Muscovite War (1605–1618) . In1648 Bogdan Khmelnytsky told the people that thePoles had sold them as slaves "into the hands of the accursedJew s". With this as their battle-cry, theCossack s killed a large number of Jews (estimated at 100,000 to 200,000) during the years 1648 –1649 (Polish-Cossack War ). In1654 PrinceAleksy Trubetsky on the side ofAlexis I of Russia led the southern flank of theMuscovian army fromBriańsk toUkraine . The territory between theDniepr andBerezyna was overrun quickly, with Aleksy Trubetsky takingMścisław andRosławl . In 1654 The Principality of Trubetsk was finallyconquer ed by Aleksy Trubetsky, Prince of Trubetsk himself, as a result of theRusso-Polish War (1654-1667) .Ruling princes
