Jonas Rein

Jonas Rein

Jonas Rein (born 1760, died 1821) was pastor in Bergen, Norway and a member of the Norwegian Assembly at Eidsvoll that wrote the Constitution of Norway on May 17th, 1814.

While a student in Copenhagen, he was a member of The Norwegian Society ("Det Norske Selskab"), a literary society for Norwegian students in Copenhagen. The members of "Det Norske Selskap" came to play a central role in the wakening of Norwegian patriotic awareness at the close of the 18th century.

From 1808 he was pastor at the "Nykirken i Bergen". There one finds a memorial that is decorated every May 17th by the commander of the "Nordnæs Bataillon" in commemoration of Rein's service to Norway.

Jonas Rein was also an author and coeditor of "Den Norske tilskuer" from 1817. In 1882 the street at "Nygård" in Bergen was named after him.
