History

Before the independence, the areas constituting Pakistan did not have any news agency except for the Associated Press and United Press International. Indian bureaus which had local offices in the area. These offices would later became the nucleus for Pakistani news agencies. Immediately, two news agencies start functioning, the APP (which would later be owned by the government) and the UPP, founded by Abdul Hafeez. Later two more news networks emerged, the PPA (renamed as PPI in 1970) and was founded by Muazzam Ali,a well known Pakistani Journalist in 1956. The other was the IPA (renamed as IPS in the 1980sspecify) which was founded by a well known and celebrated journalist Late Muhammad Hayat, in 1959. *News Network International (NNI) - was founded in 1992 by Hafiz Abdul Khaliq. The agency offers radio, television, newspapers and corporate services from its main headquarters in Islamabad And bureau offices in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawer, Quetta, and Multan. The news agency is providing news service to national and international dailies, weekly, fortnightly and monthly newspapers in English, Urdu, Pushtu, Saraiki and Sindhi languages.
*Asian News Network (ANN) - Pakistan's Second largest Urdu news agency is Asian News Network, was formed in 1998 by A. Q. Farooqi and has a history of independent and exclusive news service to more than 245 newspapers, 14 TV channels, and service to radio stations as well. There are bureau offices located in Karachi, Peshawar, Queta, with the head office in Islamabad.
*Pakistan Press International (PPI) - was founded in June 1956 as Pakistan Press Association (PPA) by Muzzam Ali, who was chief editor of APP at the time. PPI provides services for newspaper, radio, and television channels.
*United Press of Pakistan - was founded in December 1949 by Qutubuddin Aziz. It provides news feeds via fax, telephone, and email.
*Online International News Network - is Pakistan's first bilingual news and photo wire service. It focuses on national and global processes affecting the economic, social and political development of the people of Pakistan in particular and the region in general and claims to disseminate genuine as well as useful information to the nation and the people across the globe. It offers services in English, Urdu, and Arabic.
*Reuters in Pakistan - Until the mid 1980sspecify Reuters as an international news agency operated in Pakistan through APP as agreed at which point it began operating independently in Pakistan.
