Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association

The Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association was formed in 2004 by former Orb Magazine publisher, writer and promoter James Waley, convention coordinator and enthusiast Kevin A. Boyd, former self-publisher Tyrone Biljan and writer and former retailer Dave Darrigo as a means to honour Canadian creators, publishers and retailers in the medium of comic books. Darrigo and Biljan have subsequently retired from the organization to follow other pursuits.

With permission of the estate of Joe Shuster, the Canadian-born co-creator of Superman the creator & publisher awards are named the Joe Shuster Awards for Canadian Comic Book Creators. The JSA's honour excellence in Canadian comic book writing, art, cartooning, publishing and more. There is also a Hall of Fame that honours veteran creators.

An additional award, the Outstanding Canadian retailer award is named after Harry Kremer the late owner of Now & Then Books in Kitchener, Ontario.

The CCBCAA currently consists of an administrative committee, and nominating committees for: current comic books and graphic novels, Hall of Fame, webcomics and a special judging committee for the retailer award.

The only provision for active membership in any of the nominating committees or the administrative committee is that the member not be actively creating or publishing comic books, webcomics or graphic novels that could be eligible for consideration for any of the existing categories during the judging period. Eligible publishers and creators may participate in the special judging committee for the Harry Kremer comic book retailer award.

The CCBCAA is a not-for-profit organization. Funds for the Joe Shuster Awards are raised by the CCBCAA from donations, sponsorship and eBay auctions of prints and other specialty items. Sponsors - past and present - include The Toronto Star, Quebecor, Lebonfon Printing, Fisico Massage Therapy, Lionshead Resort and Comic Guaranty LLC (also known as CGC).
