Lucille Roybal-Allard (born June 12 1941), an American politician, has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing ushr|California|34 ( [http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/images/preview/congdist/ca34_109.gifmap] ), which includes downtown Los Angeles.

She was born in Boyle Heights, California, the daughter of Representative Edward R. Roybal and Lucille Beserra Roybal. She was educated at Ramona Convent Secondary School in Alhambra, California, and California State University, Los Angeles. Prior to being elected to public office she was a public relations officer and fund raising executive.

Political career

Before being elected to Congress Roybal-Allard was a member of the California State Assembly [http://capitolmuseum.ca.gov/english/legislature/history/index.html Capitol Museum] ] from 1986 to 1992.

In 1992, she won the Democratic nomination for the newly created 33rd District. She won handily in November, and has been reelected seven times with no substantive opposition. Her district was renumbered as the 34th after the 2000 Census.

She is the first Mexican-American woman to serve in Congress. Along with Nydia Velasquez of New York City, she was the second Latina after Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Miami, and with Velasquez, the first Democrat and the first elected to a full term.

She has also served as the Chair of the California Democratic Congressional Delegation (1998–1999) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. She has also been active on the Congressional Children's Caucus, Democratic Homeland Security task force and the livable communities task force.

She currently sits on the House Appropriations and Standards of Official Conduct committees.

Roybal-Allard is married to Edward T. Allard, III. Her husband is a management consultant and a retired Marine Corps captain. She lives in East Los Angeles, California .
