Ketchup (band)

Ketchup (band)

Ketchup is a Hong Kong-based independent band formed by Ken Tsoi with Rock and Sing in 1998. Although Rock and Sing has been inactive for years, Ken Tsoi has decided to continue releasing albums with the band name Ketchup. Easy-listening and subtle, the music of Ketchup would be best described as city folk. A lot of Ketchup's songs are inspired by experience from daily life in the city of Hong Kong. Along with The Pancakes, Ketchup is one of the very few singers/bands who produce songs in English language in Hong Kong.

About Ketchup

The decision of forming the band was rather arbitrary, according to an interview by now.com.hk, Ken Tsoi stated that in an afternoon in 1998, when he was hanging out with Rock and Sing in a Cha chaan teng ( a Hong Kong-styled café ), out of boredom he suddenly came out the idea of forming a band. They named the band Ketchup because they saw a bottle of ketchup on the table. The band's standard was very amateur at the beginning; with all the members neither had any knowledge about song-writing nor playing any instrument. They studied hard and picked up the skills from 1998 to 1999. In 1999, unfortunately, due to East Asian financial crisis the band no longer had the money to even rent a place for their regular practice, Ketchup was forced to disband. In 2000, in order to keep the memory of the band, Tsoi decided to record some of the songs they wrote, first with a MiniDisc recorder, but later in a professional studio. The success of his first album gave him the chance to have further release more albums.

Being currently the only active member in the band, Ken Tsoi is now responsible for song-writing, vocals. performance, and instrumental performance of the guitar. Before forming Ketchup, Ken Tsoi studied graphic design in Singapore.
