"The Medium" is a student-run weekly entertainment newspaper at Rutgers University. Its goal is to provide an entertaining alternative to the traditional college newspaper. Though it has often been the object of criticism due to its politically incorrect nature. The paper's tagline refers to itself as "The Entertainment Weekly of Rutgers University."

As a result of frequent attacks on their right to print offensive material, the editors and contributors of "The Medium" have turned the paper into an exercise in the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which includes the right to a free press. Nearly all protests against "The Medium" have been largely ineffective because of the broad rights granted to a newspaper with regards to content.

History of "The Medium"

"The Medium" printed its first issue on September 1st 1970 as the campus newspaper of Livingston College. During the 1980's, the newspaper began to abandon the traditional newsgathering and reporting activities in favor of its current format. This was partly due to the The Daily Targum becoming the official college daily newspaper across all of the New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses.

In an exercise to create a more respected and intellectual paper, "The Medium" no longer prints pornographic material. This has come at the request of advisers, and with mixed feelings from past editors and current readers.
