Zarex

Zarex

ZaRex - was a very popular sweet drink concentrate in the 1970s. It was sold as early as the 1950s. The mascot and logo is a Zebra. It is still being made and sold. It is available in Raspberry and may be available in other flavors as well. It is made by One Pie Canning Co. of W. Paris Maine 04289. Phone: 207.674.3920, Fax: 207.674.2510

Zarex is also the name of a hero of Ancient Greek mythology. [http://www.mythindex.com/greek-mythology/Z/Zarex.html]

"Zarex Corporation" (probably named after the ancient Greek hero, rather than the drink) is also the name of Frederick Hohman's recording company, specializing in organ music, through its "Pro Organo" label, and "Midnight Pipes" video series."

Jingle

The catchy jingle is still well remembered by East coast children of the 1970s:

Zarex the Zebra is zipping along...And everyone's singing the Zarex song...Zarex is zippy...Zarex is zappy...Zarex will make your whole life (or mouth) happy.Nine delicious true fruit flavoursZarex should be what you drink.

Uses

You can add water to it to make a drink or you can pour it over ice cream or snow cones. It also mixes well with seltzer, club soda, and ginger ale, and can be used to flavor lemonade or iced tea.

Container

ZaRex comes in a screw-top glass bottle. In the 1950s, Zarex came in a glass jug with a little handle on one side. The bottle holds 16 fluid ounces of syrup which can make four quarts of drink. It does not need to be refrigerated.

Ingredients

(for Raspberry ZaRex): High fructose corn syrup, water, raspberry and other natural flavors, citric acid, red no. 40, Blue no. 1, preserved with sodium benzoate.
