Lorna

Lorna

Lorna is a modern feminine given name which is commonly recognised as having been invented by R. D. Blackmore for his book "Lorna Doone". However records of the name Lorna found before the publication of Lorna Doone in 1869, for example the author of The Epicure's Companion (first published in 1837) Lorna Bunyard, show this to be false although Blackmore's book undoubtably led to an increase in the popularity of the name. The name Lorna is most popular in Scotland due to its Scottish sound. Lorna can also be considered as the feminine version of the masculine given name Lorne, which itself comes from the area of Lorne, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It can also be considered a derivative of from Loren referring to the laurel tree symbolic of honor or victory. In the U.S., according to the 1990 census [http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Lorna] , the name ranks 572 of 4275. As a surname, Lorna ranks 62296 out of 88799.
