William Montague Browne (July 71827 – April 281883) was a prominent Confederate politician, as well as a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.

Browne was born in Dublin, County Mayo, Ireland, and served in the British Army during the Crimean War. He later emigrated to the southern United States.

He served as Acting Confederate Secretary of State and as aide-de-camp to President Jefferson Davis. He was promoted to brigadier general in November 1864.

After the war, Browne was an attorney and was a professor of History and Constitutional Law at the University of Georgia. He died in Athens, Georgia and was buried in its Oconee Hill Cemetery.

*Allegedly, he was a nephew of the Marquess of Sligo. "(See discussion on Marquess of Sligo)."
