Lohr am Main (standard abbreviation Lohr a.Main) is a town in the Main-Spessart county, in Bavaria, Germany. It is on the river Main, 19 miles (30 KM) east of Aschaffenburg, and 20 miles (34 KM) northwest of Würzburg.

History

It is assumed that the original settlement was located on the church hill, which is the foothill of the Valentinus Mountain. The foothill slopes into the Main valley creating a rise between two tributary creeks Lohrbach and Rechtenbach, and the river Main. The hill provided safety from frequent floods that still occur from time to time in the narrow river valley.

The name Lohr is thought to have evolved from the old German word ‘Lare’ meaning pasture. Concrete archaeological evidence is lacking, but it is believed that due to these exceptional conditions, water, pasture, and shelter, this area was populated long before the first written documentation of 1295 CE.

By 1295 CE Lohr had grown in size and importance and had become center of the County Rieneck. Lohr was developed and fortified into a frontier fort of the duchy of Franconia. It became part of the Principality of Aschaffenburg in 1803, the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt in 1810, and the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814.

Coat of arms

A shield of alternating bars of red and gold with a superimpose blue line originating from the the left top to the right. The coat of arms consists of five (5) red bars and five (5) golden yellow bars.

In 1333 CE, the counts of Rieneck were bestowed by Ludwig the Bavarian the town of Lohr elevating it to the status of city. The coat of arms consisting of alternating bars of red and gold were those used by the counts of Rieneck. The town of Lohr was fiefs to the counts of Rieneck as well as their last domain by moving their seat from the town of Rieneck to Lohr. It is assumed that the diagonal swiveling bar represents the Main river thus attribute to the proper name Lohr upon Main.
